The Joy of Living (Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche)

A reminder to myself to take my time and to be mindful -- and also: walk.

(Extract below from The Joy of Living by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche)

There's an old Tibetan saying: "If you walk with haste, you won't reach Lhasa. Walk gently and you'll reach your goal." This proverb comes from the days when people in eastern Tibet would make a pilgrimage to Lhasa, the capital city, in the central region of the country. Pilgrims who wanted to get there quickly would walk as fast as they could, but because of the pace they set for themselves, they'd get tired or sick and have to return home. Those who traveled at an easy pace, however, pitched camp for the night, enjoyed one another's company, and then continued on the next day, actually arrived at Lhasa more quickly.

How you can help me

Dear Readers,

The day is finally here! I’m releasing my album – right now – at http://kevinakaghost.bandcamp.com. Since most of you are friends and family and have already expressed your wish to help me along my musical journey, I’m going to make it easy for you and list down some things you can do for me ;)

Of course, no obligations, if you don’t like me and what I’m doing you can just click away from this post… But if you don’t like me, why are you reading this? Am I such a great writer? Meh?

A word about the album – I’ve created this album to stand out from all the great music I’ve heard. It’s meant to be raw, some of it is meant to make you feel uncomfortable at first. Some of the lyrics are meant to be jarring. It’s an album that rewards the attentive listener (but of course all musicians who take pride in their work will say the same thing).

I hope you enjoy the album – I enjoyed making it!

Your friend/relative/teacher/acquaintance,
Kevin a.k.a Ghost

Things you can do to help me:

 1. Buy the album (and set your own price)

When you go to my bandcamp website, you will see that on the link to buy my album it says “Buy Now: $5 SGD or more”. I’ve set the price at S$5 so that those of you who are struggling with your expenses a little bit (and only a little bit, since you can afford a laptop/computer/phone to view this note!) can pay a low, low price for my music. And OK, I know I’m competing with “free” music online…

Anyway, for those of you who CAN afford it, it would be tremendously helpful if you would consider setting your own (higher) purchase price (bandcamp makes it easy, too). Think of it as an angpao (translation: traditional Singaporean Chinese gift of money) to wish me good luck on my new musical journey!

I don’t want anyone to feel bad for paying the minimum price though, and there ARE other things you can do to help me out.

2. Tell your friends about me

I hope to make my musical activities financially self-sustaining, and for that to happen, I need a critical mass of listeners who will buy my music, pay to come to my performances, and request for my music to be played on radio stations. I’m fortunate enough to be put on rotation by LiveoMusic (http://www.liveomusic.com), and I can only hope that radio stations around the world (THE WORLD!!) will pick me up too.

Of course, that’s highly unlikely. Unless…..

Unless I go viral! That’s right, help me go viral. Consider how Rebecca Black went viral – people were AFFECTED by her music (mostly negatively), but she went viral because when we clicked on “share”, we made sure to let people know how AFFECTED we were by her Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday……..

So, when you tell your friends about me, don’t just click on “share” without saying anything. Tell people why you’re sharing my music, and try to let them know how I’ve touched you (NO NOT THAT WAY).

There are “share” and “like” buttons on my pages, but to make it even easier for you, here are the links:

3. Encourage me

Being a musician is simultaneously the most fulfilling and most difficult thing I’ve ever done. On days when everything seems to be going right, I’m on top of the world and feeling like the most powerful man in the world. But there are the darker days, when my bank balance scares the living shit out of me, and when misery’s poisonous claws start to tear at me.

So.

Every ‘like’ and every comment is appreciated. Every share is appreciated. When I see someone sharing my music, my day looks a little brighter, everything feels a little better.

I'll be sure to let everyone know how someone BUYING my music feels like when it happens! :)
